The end of January is fast approaching and I am aware that my New Year blog post is long overdue! So I think I may have to admit that this particular “New Year Goal” requires a bit more focus and attention…
However it has been a very busy and productive month and start to the year in many ways, some new and exciting, some old and mundane but all equally important and necessary.
But for now lets focus on the new and exciting!
The beginning of 2018 started with a bit of charity work.
I was sitting with my family enjoying a glass of New Years Eve fizz in front of our roaring log burner, feeling very smug that we had decided not to venture out into the howling wind and torrential rain that graced this years party goers when a Facebook post popped up on my phone and reminded me of those who were trying to find a little shelter that evening. We’ve got a couple of old sleeping bags in the cupboard that haven’t been used for years I thought and so I messaged Herts Helping the Homeless to say that I had some items to donate.
I got up the next morning and thought, actually I probably have some blankets too and I am sure there are some jumpers sitting in our drawers that don’t get worn very often and so I started to have a sort out. It occurred to me that everyone probably had at least one jumper sitting in the back of a drawer that they never wore and so I thought that, seeing as I was going to do a trip, I might as well see if anyone else had items I could take with me. I put a post out on Facebook and the response was amazing. People I didn’t even know donated! I ended up making two trips as I couldn’t fit any more in the Land Rover!!
Nine Sleeping bags in total, between 12 and 15 blankets, numerous coats and countless other items of clothing, hats, gloves and socks. An incredible effort that will really help some of London’s most vulnerable people survive this winter. These items have made their way up to Camden and Finsbury Park and were most gratefully received. Herts Helping the Homeless have asked me to pass on their sincere thanks to all who have donated. They have also just issued another plea for donations, especially “gloves hats socks toiletries large coats jogging / waterproof trousers sleeping bags ……… and for our furry friends on the streets and in shelters – quilts blankets coats food treats bones towels beds toys”. If you have any of these items that you would like to donate please get in touch with Herts Helping the Homeless via message on their Facebook page or contact me and, if you are local to Buntingford, I will arrange another collection and drop off.
So what next?
Well next up was The Society of Wedding & Portrait Photographers 2018 Convention in London. Off I trotted in the dark on my old commuters route to attend a Newborn training workshop with the fabulous Gary Hill & Cass Davies from Just Pose Training. It was fantastic, the 4 hours just flew by and I’m really looking forward to putting what I have learned into practice. The rest of the day was spent browsing the tradeshow and attending a couple of lighting demonstrations which I am again looking forward to putting into practice. I was also looking to see if there were any new products that I can introduce to my range but I am really pleased to report that actually my current range seems to cover all the products that are most suitable for my Portraits by Sarah Clients.
One of my “goals” for 2018 is to complete at least 1 training course, either in person or online, each month. (I understand resolutions are old news and goals are the new thing!) I can happily tick January off, the SWPP convention definitely covered that, and I have several online courses to complete in February, March & April before I attend the Newborn Photography Show in May where I am booked onto a Newborn Photography Training workshop with the awesome Kelly Brown of Little Pieces Photography and a fabulous course titled Pose, Light, Refine with the very talented Mr Gary Hill. I am sure to be looking for some “models” to practice what I have learnt after this so please make sure you are following my Facebook page and that you are on my Mailing List if you would like to be considered when the time comes. I will be mainly looking for babies who are due mid May and children over 6, who enjoy being photographed 😉 but all new followers are gladly welcomed!
One of my other 2018 goals is to spend a bit more time on personal projects, developing my photography skills in different areas, trying out new techniques and just experimenting in general. I will go into this in more details in part 2 of this blog post but for now I’ll just say that this is my office for the day!
Hard Life isn’t it!!
Part 2 coming soon…

Meet Theo – and what a lovely bundle of cuddles he is too!
We had another fabulous newborn photography session with lots of squidgy baby photos and some gorgeous sibling portraits with Theo’s very proud big sister.
Theo loved getting all cosy in the basket props. In fact all the babies love snuggling into these types of props, it makes them feel cosy and secure. I use them at some point during every session, usually just after baby has been fed and we are waiting for them to go off to sleep. They usually drift off nicely once snuggled into the basket. I do also have a few baby soothing tricks up my sleeve that I can pull out for any reluctant sleepers!
As you can see we did get Theo off into a lovely sleep and what can I say about those lips, aren’t they adorable!

This was an amazing newborn and family photography session. What a lovely family, super chilled and lots of fun. Georgia is a truly lucky girl to have such caring and devoted big brothers. They have a wonderful relationship already and I am sure that will continue to grow.
It took me ages to reduce the images from this session down to a reasonable number to edit and it has taken just as long to pick out a selection to share in this blog post! So with great difficulty I have chosen some of my favourite photographs from Georgia’s newborn photo shoot to share with you.
P.S. Although no babies were harmed in the making of this slideshow, a Mummy and an older Brother were pee’d on!!

Only 7 days until the Christmas Mini Photo Shoots
There are still spaces for Friday’s sessions – suitable for sitting babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers or anyone lucky enough to have an inset day!!
Only one session remaining on Saturday
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to have some gorgeous festive portraits of your children this Christmas. Perfect for bespoke Christmas Cards and Grandparents gifts. The sessions are suitable for children and babies over 4 months and can include individual portraits and sibling portraits with up to 3 children. Please note it is only a small set so it won’t be possible to do family images. If there are more than 3 children please book an additional consecutive session. The sessions will take place at the Portraits by Sarah Studio in Great Hormead, just outside Buntingford.
The colour scheme is white and gold, please see the image above. I would suggest wearing whites, creams or pastels although I do also think that perhaps a rich red, green or navy might also work. Try to steer clear of bold patterns or logos. Delicate patterns and designs should be fine. It can be party wear, casual wear, a dressing up outfit or cosy pj’s. If you would like any outfit advice please email me some small pics of your choices and I will be happy to offer some guidance. There won’t be time for changing clothes so Clients are asked to arrive ready for the session.
The sessions will be held on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November.
There are 3 packages to choose from:
Basic Christmas Mini Session – £50
includes 20 minute session and 1 downloadable digital image with print release and 1 10×8″ mounted print of the digital image
Premium Christmas Mini Session – £95

Another session with returning Clients and these ones are super special as they don’t even live in the UK at the moment, they scheduled their session to take place during their holiday!
Ella was a tiny baby when I first met the family. She was a newborn model during a portfolio session and she was one of the smallest babies I have photographed. There is a lovely photograph of Ella in a small wire basket and I don’t think I have photographed another baby small enough to use that prop again! Ella has been back to visit me since then for a couple of photo shoots and it was great to see how much she has changed since her last visit.
We had a great chat and I am amazed at her multi lingual skills. It was a fabulous session and Ella was on top form. Here are a few of my favourites from the session:

Meet Primrose! Isn’t she just gorgeous? She was only 6 days old at her newborn photography session and she was such a little cutie. I had the pleasure of photographing Primrose’s older brother as a newborn baby and so it was an added bonus to meet the family again and to see how much he had changed. He is gorgeous too and at just over 18 months he is still a baby himself.
I don’t often shoot on my black background but I should do more often as I really love the intimate feel it gives to portraits. We got some lovely photographs of Primrose, her brother and her family during her newborn photo shoot. Here are a few of my favourites:

Another fantastic newborn session. This little lady was just gorgeous and it was such a pleasure to see her family again. I first met the family when they visited with Georgie’s big brother for his newborn session and it was a pleasure to see what a lovely little lad he has grown into. Georgie is very lucky to have such a caring big brother.
I also have to mention that these guys really are incredible! It was a 3 hour round trip for their newborn session which is a long way to travel with a 12 day old newborn and a toddler. What’s more they arrived smiling and on time!!

Introducing Nathan! Nathan is 7 months old and just adorable.
I had the pleasure of photographing Nathan as a Newborn so it was lovely to see him again and to see how much he has grown over the last 7 months. Babies really are incredible, their growth and development during the first year is remarkable and it’s so lovely to be able to capture each stage.
I love Nathan’s expressions, it’s a great age for baby portraits as personalities and characters are beginning to show together with physical development allowing for unaided sitting images. The combination makes for some wonderfully timeless baby photographs with lots of expression.
Here are a few of my favourites photographs from the session.

Days 2 & 3 of the Autumn Mini Photo Shoots proved to be just as much fun and the weather was kind to us too. The great thing about outdoor photos is that each shoot is different producing unique portraits in natural surroundings. Kids usually love being outside too so they are usually more relaxed with natural expressions.
Here are a few of the favourites

Introducing Oliver! Oliver is 7 months old, a real cutie and full of smiles. We had a lovely session. What a great family. Between 6 and 10 months is a great age for a baby photography session as baby is often sitting unaided but not usually on the move, although of course there are exceptions to both! It’s a fabulous time to capture smiles and giggles as the babies are starting to develop their own personalities and find things funny.
It’s also a great time to have some family photographs. Here are a few of my favourite images from the session.
